Hubballi Prepares for Grand Ugadi Celebrations Amid Rising Flower Costs

The vibrant city of Hubballi is buzzing with activity as residents enthusiastically prepare for the Ugadi festival, the traditional New Year celebration, scheduled for Thursday. Despite facing a significant surge in flower prices, the festive spirit remains undiminished across the city's major markets.

Festive Preparations in Full Swing Despite Heat

Even under scorching summer conditions, Hubballi has transformed into a hub of festive commerce. Markets throughout the commercial city are bustling with shoppers purchasing essential items for Ugadi celebrations, including flowers, fresh fruits, electronic goods, vehicles, seasonal mangoes, and traditional neem leaves.

The demand for new clothing has shown a noticeable increase this year, with crowds flocking to clothing stores and shopping malls across the city. Key commercial areas experiencing heavy foot traffic include Durgad Bail, Janatha Bazaar, Sangolli Rayanna Circle, CBT, Old Hubballi, and Keshwapur markets.

Sharp Increase in Flower Prices Creates Financial Burden

The most significant challenge facing celebrants this Ugadi season is the dramatic rise in flower prices. Essential floral varieties for traditional decorations and rituals have seen substantial price hikes, creating additional financial pressure on households during the festive period.

Current flower prices in Hubballi markets:

  • Jasmine: Rs 700-850 per kilogram
  • Chrysanthemum (Sevanti): Rs 280-350 per kilogram
  • Roses: Rs 200-300 per kilogram

Other popular flowers including kanakambar and tuberose have also experienced significant price increases, though specific rates weren't detailed in market reports.

Market Experts Explain Price Trends

Abdul Khadar Tamboli, a wholesale flower merchant in Hubballi, confirmed the price escalation to local media. "The price of flowers has increased substantially this season," Tamboli explained. "Chrysanthemum sevanti is selling for Rs 280-350, while roses command Rs 200-300 per kilogram. We expect further price increases due to the series of festivals throughout this month and April."

Local resident Chandrabai Hulakoti shared her perspective on the seasonal pricing pattern: "Flower prices typically rise during festivals and then gradually decrease afterward. Ugadi, being the first major festival of the year, is celebrated with great enthusiasm annually. Despite the high costs, we continue to purchase flowers as they're essential for our traditional celebrations."

Traditional Observances Continue Uninterrupted

Despite economic challenges, traditional Ugadi observances proceeded as planned. On Wednesday, devotees performed special Ugadi Amavasya pujas, maintaining religious customs that mark the beginning of the New Year celebrations.

The combination of crowded markets, increased shopping activity, and continued religious observances demonstrates Hubballi's resilient festive spirit, even as residents navigate the practical challenges of rising celebration costs.
