Trichy's Fourth Annual Book Fair Concludes with Spectacular Success
The fourth edition of the annual book fair in Trichy, which commenced on February 14, wrapped up on Sunday, marking a resounding success with impressive sales figures and widespread participation. Over the nine-day event, approximately 20 lakh books were sold, generating a total revenue of more than Rs 65 lakh. This vibrant literary gathering was held at St. John's Vestry Higher Secondary School, conveniently located near the Trichy central bus stand, providing easy access for visitors from across the region.
Massive Turnout and Diverse Participation
The fair attracted an enormous crowd, with lakhs of people in attendance, including a significant number of 75,000 students who eagerly explored the vast collection of books. According to district library officer R Saravanakumar, the event saw the sale of over 20 lakh books spanning various genres, catering to diverse reading interests. The fair featured 130 stalls that displayed around one crore books, showcasing the rich literary offerings from at least 100 publishers and book houses hailing from across South India.
Cultural and Literary Enrichment
Beyond book sales, the fair served as a hub for cultural and intellectual exchange. Dozens of renowned literary figures, including writers, poets, educationists, playwrights, lyricists, and orators, engaged with visitors through insightful addresses and discussions. The event was further enlivened by performances from hundreds of students, drama artists, and dance troupes, who entertained the crowds throughout the nine days, adding a dynamic and festive atmosphere to the literary celebration.
Community Initiatives and Special Events
In a heartwarming display of community spirit, more than 300 people donated over 1,000 books at a special stall dedicated to supporting inmates of the Trichy Central Prison. This initiative highlighted the fair's commitment to promoting literacy and compassion beyond its commercial aspects. On the final day, students and artistes presented a play based on the book 'Veera Yuga Nayagan Velpari' by Su Venkatesan, offering a creative interpretation of literary works. The fair concluded with a valedictory function graced by district officials, who commended the organizers and participants for their efforts.
