TDB President Addresses Sabarimala Gold Scam and Priest's Position

T'puram: In a significant development regarding the Sabarimala gold scam, Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) president K Jayakumar has clarified that there is currently no immediate need to decide on removing Tanthri Kandararu Rajeevaru from his priest position. Rajeevaru is an accused in the ongoing investigation into the financial fraud at the revered temple.

Priest's Term and Investigation Backing

Jayakumar emphasized that Rajeevaru's term should be allowed to conclude naturally, with a decision on his future to be made in due course. He strongly backed the enforcement directorate's (ED) investigation into the case, stating that no matter how substantial the financial fraud, it must be fully exposed and the probe should proceed without hindrance.

"At present, there is no need to discuss the removal of Rajeevaru. His term should be allowed to end. Until October, the responsibilities of the priest are assigned to Kandararu Mahesh Mohanaru, and a decision will be made after that," Jayakumar said during a press briefing.

Vision Sabarimala: Comprehensive Reforms Announced

The TDB president's statements came following the presentation of Vision Sabarimala, an ambitious plan aimed at bringing comprehensive changes to the temple for the upcoming Makaravilakku season. Key highlights of this vision include:

  • A dedicated budget allocation specifically for Sabarimala to enhance infrastructure and services.
  • Establishment of a new pilgrim centre at Pamba to improve visitor facilities and management.
  • Decisions regarding the rotation of priests each season to ensure transparency and efficiency.
  • Regulation of loudspeaker use at Sannidhanam to maintain a serene atmosphere.
  • Announcements about missing persons to be made every 30 hours, with notifications provided in all major languages to assist devotees.

Financial Oversight and Digital Transformation

Jayakumar revealed that the revenue for this season amounted to Rs 483 crore, though the final expenses have not yet been calculated. To ensure financial accountability, an audit will be conducted within 10 days after the Makaravilakku festival concludes.

In a move to curb unauthorized funding, the board has decided not to encourage any self-proclaimed sponsors. Donations from such entities will not be accepted, and if necessary, the TDB will identify and appoint an official sponsor through proper channels.

All financial transactions at Sabarimala will be fully digitalized, with officials receiving specialized training to implement this system effectively. Additionally, a decision has been made to reduce the number of temporary employees to streamline operations and cut costs.

Investigation into Unauthorized Activities

Jayakumar also addressed the issue of unauthorized film shooting at Sabarimala, confirming that an investigation will be conducted into the incident. The purpose of the shooting will be thoroughly examined, as permission was not granted by the board. The footage will be reviewed to determine any violations of temple protocols.

These measures underscore the TDB's commitment to transparency, reform, and upholding the sanctity of Sabarimala amidst the challenges posed by the gold scam and other operational issues.
