Historic St Anne's Chapel in Udupi Set for Grand Reopening After Extensive Renovation

The beautifully renovated St Anne's Chapel at Thottam, located near Malpe in Udupi district, is scheduled for a formal inauguration ceremony this Wednesday. This significant religious event will mark the culmination of an extensive restoration project that has transformed the historic chapel.

Sacred Inauguration Ceremony

The chapel will receive a formal blessing from Rev Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, the esteemed Bishop of the Diocese of Udupi. Bishop Lobo will also celebrate the Holy Eucharist during the inaugural ceremony, lending spiritual significance to the occasion.

Following the Mass, the faithful will participate in Rosary prayers, after which a candlelight procession will proceed from the chapel to the main church. The day's events will conclude with a brief felicitation programme to honour all those who contributed to the successful renovation of this important religious site.

Historical Significance and Origins

The chapel's history dates back to the late 19th century when Catholic faithful in the area primarily depended on the Milagres Church in Kallianpur for worship. Recognizing the need for a more accessible place of worship, late Miguel Vaz of Thottam village took the initiative to obtain permission from the Bishop of the Goa Diocese to construct a chapel.

Construction work began in 1885, and the chapel was officially inaugurated on May 24, 1905. Following the construction of the independent St Anne Church at Thottam on May 19, 1933, the chapel came under its administration, with Holy Mass offered there once a week.

Evolution and Renovation Journey

Over the decades, population growth in the area rendered the original chapel inadequate, as it could accommodate only around 50 worshippers. In 2010, citing space constraints, the Vaz family generously handed over the chapel entirely to the church administration.

Under the guidance of then parish priest Rev Fr Frederick D'Souza, necessary documents were submitted to the Bishop of the Diocese of Mangaluru, Rev Dr Aloysius D'Souza, paving the way for renovation work. The Bishop later celebrated Holy Mass at the chapel on the feast of St Anne on July 26.

As the number of devotees continued to rise steadily, plans for a complete renovation took shape under the leadership of the present parish priest, Rev Fr Denis D'Sa. The project received enthusiastic cooperation from parishioners and the full support of the Vaz family.

Modern Transformation and Enhanced Capacity

Renovation construction began on May 28, 2024, and has resulted in a remarkable transformation of the historic chapel. The renovated structure now accommodates approximately 250 devotees indoors, with additional arrangements for nearly 200 people outside during special ceremonies and festivals.

Significantly, the original altar has been carefully preserved and artistically enhanced to maintain the chapel's historical character while incorporating modern elements. The renovation project also received financial assistance from the Karnataka government's Christian Development Corporation, demonstrating community and governmental support for preserving religious heritage.

Devotional Significance

St Anne enjoys special devotion among the Catholic faithful, particularly among women devotees who hold the saint in high esteem. The renovated chapel will serve as an important center for this devotion while providing adequate space for the growing congregation.

The reopening of St Anne's Chapel represents not just a physical restoration but a revitalization of community worship and religious heritage in the Udupi region, blending historical preservation with contemporary needs of the faithful.
