Pune's Streets Aglow as Muslim Community Prepares for Eid-ul-Fitr Celebrations

The city of Pune is currently adorned with vibrant decorations, and masjids are illuminated in anticipation of Eid-ul-Fitr. As the festival approaches, families from the Muslim community are flocking to stores and stalls in large numbers for last-minute shopping of clothes and jewellery, creating a bustling atmosphere across the city.

Neighbourhoods Bustle with Festive Activity

Areas renowned for their delicious iftar offerings are experiencing long queues, with people eagerly waiting to savour their favourite dishes. This surge in activity highlights the communal spirit and culinary traditions that define the Ramadan period.

Personal Stories of Excitement and Tradition

Aleena Basigarage from Undri expressed her enthusiasm, stating that Eid is a special time when she can purchase outfits she has desired throughout the year. "I wanted a yellow lehenga for the last three months and waited to buy the ensemble. I have the perfect jewellery to go with it. All I need now are silver sequined shoes. I am very excited," she shared.

In Kondhwa, women like Mariya Shaikh are busy preparing for the festivities. Mariya was rushing to buy ingredients for Sheer Khurma on Wednesday evening. "I love the entire month of Ramzan. I get to eat so many delicacies and my favourite biryani, even though we spend the day fasting. I love mutton biryani and rogan josh. I go to my grandmother's house to eat. All the cousins gather for iftar and we enjoy ourselves. I am excited for the Eidi that I will get from all my relatives. I have bought a new purse to keep the money I get!" she explained.

Women in Kausarbaug, Kondhwa, listed popular items in demand, including:

  • Embroidered kurtis
  • Diamond-studded bangles
  • Colourful jewellery
  • Dry fruits
  • Henna
  • Fragrant attar
  • Embellished footwear

Completing the Eid Look and Embracing Charity

Abdul Mulani of Camp was searching for a skullcap to match his kurta at Fashion Street in Pulgate. "I have already bought everything I need — including the sandals and the attar. All that is left is a cap and my entire Eid look will be complete. My favourite part about the festivities is my mother's slow-cooked mutton biryani. It is the best. All my friends come to my house to eat the halwa she makes," he said.

Abdul also emphasized the importance of charity during Eid. "We also give zakat to people sitting outside the Azma Campus masjid. Every year, we distribute clothes, food and money to the needy. Their happiness completes my celebrations. It is the spirit of Eid to share what we have with those who don't," he added, highlighting the festival's core values of generosity and community support.

The preparations in Pune reflect a blend of personal joy, culinary traditions, and charitable acts, making Eid-ul-Fitr a time of celebration and togetherness for the Muslim community.
