Pune's Muslim Community Prepares for Eid-ul-Fitr with Festive Fervor

The Muslim community across Pune is actively preparing for Eid-ul-Fitr, which is anticipated to be celebrated on Saturday, contingent upon the sighting of the crescent moon on Friday. In recent days, the city has witnessed a significant surge in market activity as households engage in extensive preparations for the joyous occasion.

Bustling Markets and Household Preparations

Local markets in Pune have been experiencing a steady influx of shoppers, with shops specializing in clothing, footwear, dry fruits, and decorative items reporting high foot traffic. Tailors are working extended hours to ensure timely delivery of festive outfits. Neighborhoods such as Kondhwa's Meethanagar have remained lively late into the night, reflecting the community's enthusiasm.

Homemakers like Rafath Shaikh from Kondhwa are busy cleaning their homes and making arrangements to welcome guests. "Eid is a time when relatives and friends come together to celebrate and strengthen bonds," she remarked, highlighting the social significance of the festival.

Excitement Among Children and Youth

Children are particularly excited about the festivities. Twelve-year-old Rehan expressed his anticipation, saying, "I bought a new kurta and shoes. I am eagerly waiting for Eid namaz and then visiting relatives to collect Eidi." Meanwhile, youngsters like Farjad Shaikh from Shivnerinagar are finalizing their festive looks, with many ensuring their attire is complete with matching footwear.

Traditional Dishes and Charitable Acts

In many households, preparations for traditional dishes are underway. Tanvi Shaikh of Kausarbaug noted that sheer khurma is a staple, with families preparing it in the morning and serving it to guests throughout the day. "Eid is incomplete without this delicious dessert," she emphasized.

The festival also places a strong emphasis on charity, with many community members contributing zakat to support the underprivileged, reinforcing the spirit of giving and compassion.

Arrangements for Eid Namaz

Preparations for Eid namaz are in full swing across Pune. Eidgahs are being readied to accommodate large gatherings, and mosques have completed arrangements for the special prayers. Mazhar Shaikh reflected on the significance of Ramzan, stating, "Ramzan is a blessed month that strengthens our faith. Seeing it conclude is a bittersweet moment."

Dawoodi Bohra Community Celebrations

The Dawoodi Bohra community commenced their Eid celebrations on Thursday, following the lunar calendar. The day began with fajar prayers before dawn, followed by congregational Eid namaz at local masjids.

Nisrin Jinia, a resident of Wanowrie, described unique aspects of their celebration. "A key feature is the Khutba delivered by the Aamil or Syedna, focusing on gratitude and spiritual growth. Community bonding is centered around the thaal, where eight people sit together to eat, promoting equality and unity. The meal traditionally begins and ends with a pinch of salt, adhering to prophetic traditions."

Families dress in traditional attire, with men wearing white kurta-izar with gold-trimmed topis and women adorned in colorful, embroidered ridas. The day involves visiting one another to exchange greetings, concluding with a sense of renewed faith and strengthened social ties.
