Odisha Government Approves Rs 1 Crore Grant for New Wooden Chariot at Baladevjew Temple
The state government of Odisha has officially sanctioned a substantial financial grant of Rs 1 crore for the construction of a brand-new wooden chariot, or rath, dedicated to Lord Baladevjew. This significant development was announced on Wednesday through an official statement, highlighting the government's commitment to preserving religious heritage and ensuring safety during the annual Rath Yatra festival.
Addressing Structural Concerns with a New Chariot
According to Balabhadra Patri, the executive officer of the Baladevjew temple, the decision to build a new chariot comes in response to critical structural issues observed in the previous one. "We require approximately 3,550 cubic feet of high-quality sal wood to construct the new chariot," Patri explained. "In past years, we relied on old timbers for the chariot's construction, which led to significant problems. Last year, six out of the 14 wheels developed cracks, posing safety risks during the Rath Yatra. This year, we are committed to building a completely new chariot equipped with 14 sturdy wheels to ensure a secure and smooth procession."
Historical Significance of the Baladevjew Temple
The Baladevjew temple, located in the Ichapur locality of Kendrapada town, holds deep historical and cultural importance. It was originally constructed in 1761 by Raja Gopal Sandha, the king of Kujang, during the Maratha rule in Odisha. This temple has been a central site for religious activities and community gatherings for centuries, making the Rath Yatra a key event in the region's cultural calendar.
