The 26th National Theatre Festival has officially begun at Virsa Vihar in Amritsar, marking a significant cultural milestone for the city. This prestigious event, which started on Saturday, March 21, 2026, brings together some of India's most renowned theatre groups and artists for a vibrant 10-day celebration of performing arts.
Organizational Collaboration and Dedication
The festival is being organized by Manch-Rangmanch in collaboration with several key institutions, including the North Zone Cultural Centre, the Department of Cultural Affairs under the Government of India, the Department of Languages of Punjab, and Virsa Vihar, Amritsar. According to noted theatre personality Kewal Dhaliwal, this year's edition is dedicated to the memory of the acclaimed playwright Jatinder Brar, adding a poignant tribute to the festivities. The event also coincides with the celebration of World Theatre Day, highlighting its global significance.

The festival opened on March 21 with the play 'Kudesan', written by Jatinder Brar and directed by Kewal Dhaliwal. The following day, March 22, featured '1675', penned by Amarjit Grewal and also directed by Dhaliwal. The lineup continues with a diverse array of performances:
- March 23: 'Tu Agla Varka Fol' by Sahib Singh
- March 24: 'Khidde Rahen Gulab' by Shabdish
- March 25: 'Aap Hamare Hai Kaun' presented by Natrang Jammu group, written and directed by Balwant Thakur
- March 26: 'Aai Ladki', based on works by noted writer Krishna Sobti, directed by Seema Sharma
- March 27: 'Bhar' by Maninder Kang, directed by Kewal Dhaliwal, presented by the Amritsar School of Drama
On March 27, in honor of World Theatre Day, eminent playwright Atamjit will be conferred the Shri Jatinder Brar Memorial Theatre Award by Virsa Vihar, Amritsar, recognizing outstanding contributions to theatre.

The festival will proceed with further performances, including 'Zindagi De Rang' by Navtej Singh and Emmanuel Singh on March 28, 'Dhoop Ka Ek Tukda' by Nirmal Verma on March 29, and the concluding play 'Jogia Raag', written by Vijay Pandit and directed by Devendra Raj Ankur, on March 30.
