The historic Amalodbhava Maate Church, a revered landmark on the outskirts of Srirangapatna in Mandya district, resonated with special prayers and festive joy as it celebrated Christmas this year. This celebration held added significance as the church, popularly known as the Immaculate Conception Church or Ganjam Church, recently marked its 225th anniversary, solidifying its status as a pillar of faith and history in the Mysuru region.
A Legacy Built by Dodda Swami: The Church's Rich History
The foundation of this sacred site was laid in the year 1800 by the French missionary Fr Abbe Dubois. Recognised as the first Catholic church in the Mysuru region, its more than two-century-old legacy is deeply intertwined with the social fabric of the area. Fr Dubois didn't just build a place of worship; he lived among the local community, dedicating himself to spreading education, healthcare, and religious values.
His compassionate service, especially during a chickenpox outbreak when he brought medicines from France, earned him the affectionate title "Dodda Swami" from the people. The church itself stands as a testament to his work, constructed with wood and lime mortar. Its interiors, adorned with paintings depicting the life of Christ, continue to awe visitors. A massive metal bell brought from France by Fr Dubois, installed at the entrance, remains a key attraction.
Festive Grandeur and Devotional Fervour Mark Christmas
This Christmas, the ancient church witnessed a large and devout gathering. People from nearby villages, as well as from Mandya, Mysuru, and surrounding districts, flocked to the church to offer prayers and partake in the celebrations. Parish Priest Fr John Sagaya Pushparaj informed that special midnight worship services were held on December 24, followed by morning prayers on Christmas Day, all conducted in a peaceful and devotional atmosphere.
Adding to the festive spirit, a spectacular 30-foot Christmas star was erected in front of the church. The celebrations saw participation from elected representatives, including the local MLA, and leaders from various religious communities, highlighting the church's role as a unifying community space.
Preserving Heritage for the Future
The church is not just a living monument but also a carefully preserved heritage site. It houses the original pedestals of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary installed by Fr Abbe Dubois himself, which have been renovated while meticulously preserving their original form. The church also preserves the attire of its founder.
Looking to the future, Fr Pushparaj mentioned that a request has been made to the government for support to renovate the historic structure. Once assistance is received, necessary plastering and conservation works will be undertaken at the earliest to ensure this 225-year-old architectural and spiritual treasure continues to inspire generations to come. The grand anniversary celebrations on December 7, held in the presence of the Bishop and clergy, underscored the enduring significance of this sacred site in Karnataka's cultural landscape.
