Mandya to Get Rs 5.5 Crore Kannada Bhavan After Literary Meet Success
Mandya to Build Rs 5.5 Crore Kannada Bhavan Post Sammelana

In a significant move to celebrate the triumph of the 87th Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelana, the city of Mandya is set to witness the construction of a dedicated Kannada Bhavan. This cultural hub, estimated to cost Rs 5.5 crore, aims to immortalize the success of the literary meet and foster Kannada language and heritage.

Commemorating a Literary Landmark

The 87th edition of the Kannada literary meet was held in Mandya from December 20 to 22, 2024. This grand event not only celebrated the unity of the Kannada language but also showcased the state's rich literature, culture, and heritage. Following its resounding success, there was a growing consensus among elected representatives, writers, and local residents to establish a permanent institution dedicated to Kannada arts and letters.

Foundation Stone-Laying Ceremony Details

The foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Kannada Bhavan is scheduled for January 30, 2025. The project will be developed on land reserved within the premises of the Sir M Visvesvaraya Indoor Stadium in Mandya. District Commissioner Kumara confirmed that the ceremony will be graced by the presence of Adichunchanagiri mutt seer Nirmalanandanatha Swami, adding a spiritual dimension to the event.

Key dignitaries expected to attend include N Chaluvarayaswamy, the Minister for Agriculture and the district minister for Mandya, along with various elected representatives and prominent literary figures. This gathering underscores the project's importance in promoting Kannada culture and literature.

Funding and Financial Breakdown

The total project cost of Rs 5.5 crore has been secured through a combination of sources. A substantial portion, Rs 2.5 crore, was sourced from the savings generated during the Sahitya Sammelana itself, reflecting the event's financial prudence and success. The remaining Rs 3 crore was sanctioned under the chief minister's infrastructure development scheme, highlighting government support for cultural initiatives.

Controversy and Disappointment Among Sportspersons

Despite the enthusiasm for the Kannada Bhavan, the project has sparked disappointment among local sportspersons. The land allocated for the Bhavan was originally reserved for sports development, leading to concerns about the prioritization of cultural projects over athletic facilities. This decision has raised questions about balancing cultural preservation with sports infrastructure in Mandya.

The establishment of the Kannada Bhavan represents a pivotal step in preserving and promoting Kannada heritage, yet it also brings to light the challenges of resource allocation in urban development. As Mandya prepares for this new cultural landmark, the community hopes for a harmonious integration of literary and sporting interests.
