Mahjong's Quiet Rise in Chennai: From Screen to Social Ritual
"I missed my turn again… I could've called pung!" a participant exclaims with a groan, carefully rearranging her tiles into neat rows as laughter fills the room. Around her, green felt-topped mahjong tables are arranged in precise grids, with stacks of ivory-colored tiles producing soft, rhythmic clicks as players construct walls, draw, and discard. Some lean forward intently, focused on their strategies, while others take sips of hot chocolate between rounds, yet all eyes repeatedly return to the intricate patterns laid out before them.
This vibrant scene is becoming increasingly common at mahjong gatherings across Chennai, where a game once only seen in films or during travels abroad is steadily cultivating a devoted and diverse community of enthusiasts.
'Mahjong Has a Book Club-Like Atmosphere'
For Shalini Manglani, who conducts mahjong classes, the game's appeal extends far beyond mere strategy, deeply rooted in fostering community connections. "The mahjong table transforms into a sanctuary for laughter, camaraderie, and shared passions," she explains, highlighting that her sessions attract a wide range of participants, from young mothers to busy working professionals.
Rupali, who was inspired to take up the game after watching Crazy Rich Asians, shares, "You encounter individuals from various backgrounds, and before you realize it, two or three hours have flown by, leaving you with a sense of joy and fulfillment." Priyanka Acharya describes it as an engaging alternative to conventional outings like dining or drinking, while newcomers appreciate it as a novel way to bond with friends. "It embodies a book club–like ambiance… relaxed, devoid of screens, and profoundly social," Shalini adds, emphasizing its unique charm.
'Trying Mahjong Felt Like a Natural Extension'
For a close-knit group of residents who already meet regularly, mahjong has seamlessly integrated into their rotation of activities, which includes potluck lunches, movie afternoons, and familiar card games. The group adopts a casual approach, taking turns hosting sessions to maintain an informal vibe. "We're accustomed to gathering simply to converse, play cards, and share meals, so introducing mahjong felt like a logical and natural progression," says Vatsala RS, who participates with a neighborhood circle.
"Some days we immerse ourselves in the game, while on others, we just catch up on life." Members note that the learning process has only enhanced their enjoyment. "None of us were raised with this game," Anuradha points out. "However, mastering it together has injected a fresh, dynamic energy into our meetings."
From Rummy Tables to Mahjong Tiles
What originated as a fleeting curiosity has evolved into a cherished Friday tradition for a small circle of women in the city. Many first encountered mahjong through literature, where it was depicted unfolding over leisurely, convivial afternoons. "I used to read about women overseas playing mahjong, and it sounded like a fascinating blend of strategic gameplay and a kitty party," laughs Annapoornae, who now hosts games at her home in Adyar. "Now, we've swapped our rummy afternoons for the tactile pleasure of tiles on the table."
This shift underscores how mahjong is not just a game but a cultural phenomenon, weaving together elements of tradition, strategy, and social interaction to create lasting bonds in Chennai's urban landscape.
