Mahashivaratri: Lucknow Temples See Massive Devotee Turnout

Mahashivaratri Celebrations Illuminate Lucknow with Spiritual Fervor

From the stroke of midnight on Saturday, devotees in large numbers converged upon major Shiv temples across Lucknow to mark the auspicious occasion of Mahashivaratri. The sacred day was filled with continuous prayers, devotional chants of 'Har Har Mahadev' and 'Om Namah Shivaay', and the ritual of 'jalabhishek' (water offering) that resonated through the city all through Sunday.

Mankameshwar Temple: A Hub of Devotional Activities

At the revered Mankameshwar temple located in Daliganj, the shrine was beautifully adorned with vibrant flowers, elegant curtains, and modern LED lighting. Devotees formed serpentine queues, patiently waiting for their turn for darshan (sacred viewing). The temple management organized a community feast (bhandara) serving traditional dishes like sabudana khichdi and kheer to all attendees. Additionally, artistic installations of Nandi bull and Lord Shiv with Parvati, crafted from cardboard and wood, were prominently displayed. In the evening, the sacred Rudrabhishek ceremony was performed, where devotees offered milk, curd, honey, and ghee to the deity.

Sudha Chandaran, a dedicated devotee, shared her experience: "I stood barefoot in the queue for five long hours, but the moment I laid eyes on the deity, all my pain and exhaustion completely vanished." Another worshipper, Jigyasa Dogra, expressed her prayers: "I offered my sincere prayers for the health and prosperity of my husband and children."

Mahakal Temple: Traditional Rituals and Night Vigils

The Mahakal temple in Rajendranagar witnessed unique traditions as the deity was decorated with hemp (bhang) and fresh flowers, followed by a special 'bhasma aarti' (ash ritual). After this ceremony, the temple gates were opened to the waiting devotees. Long queues had already formed outside the temple during the night, with worshippers offering water and prayers in accordance with traditional rituals. A 'bhog' consisting of dry fruits, sweets, and fresh fruits was presented to the deity. In the evening, a grand maha aarti was performed using 101, 11, and five earthen lamps separately, creating a mesmerizing spiritual atmosphere.

Koneshwar Temple: Floral Decorations and Evening Bhajans

At Koneshwar Temple in Chowk, the deity was exquisitely decorated with a variety of flowers including roses, chrysanthemums, hibiscus, jasmine, and marigolds, and was crowned with a magnificent floral crown. Devotees performed jalabhishek in the morning hours. As evening descended, the temple premises echoed with devotional bhajans (hymns), and a bhandara featuring thandai (a traditional drink) was organized for all.

Trisha Tiwari, a devotee at this temple, stated: "I observed a strict fast and prayed earnestly for the wellbeing and happiness of my entire family."

Buddheshwar Temple: Elaborate Offerings and Community Fair

The Buddheshwar temple on Mohan Road saw the deity adorned with flowers and fruits, while a special '51-mukhi' aarti was conducted. A grand Mahabhog, which included chhappan bhog (56 varieties of food), fruits, sweets, and dry fruits, was offered to the deity. Priests led the congregation in singing devotional bhajans, and a bhandara served puri sabzi, sabudana khichdi, kheer, and fruits to the devotees.

A two-day fair was organized in conjunction with the celebrations, where devotees purchased various items such as:

  • Jewellery
  • Clothes
  • Utensils
  • Home décor items

Prahlad Raju Bajpai, another devotee, recounted his observance: "I maintained a fast and offered water, sweets, and bel leaves to the deity as part of my prayers."

The Mahashivaratri celebrations in Lucknow showcased a beautiful blend of deep devotion, traditional rituals, and community spirit, bringing together people from all walks of life in a shared expression of faith and reverence.
