Maharashtra Day, also known as Maharashtra Diwas, is being celebrated today on May 1, 2026. The day is observed annually on this date to commemorate the creation of the largest western state in India.
Why is Maharashtra Day Celebrated?
After India's independence, the States Reorganisation Act of 1956 grouped provinces and princely states into the Union of India based on languages. However, the erstwhile Bombay state comprised numerous linguistic groups, including Marathi, Konkani, Gujarati, and Kutchi speakers, making reorganization difficult. In response, a regional movement known as the Samyukta Maharashtra Andolan began agitations and protests, demanding a separate Marathi-speaking state. Consequently, on May 1, 1960, the Bombay Reorganisation Act came into effect, creating Maharashtra after many protests and demonstrations in support of the move. Thus, the former Bombay state was dismantled to form two new states: Maharashtra for Marathi-speaking people and Gujarat for those whose mother tongue is Gujarati.
