Magh Mela in Prayagraj Achieves Dual Success: Spiritual Gathering and Government Outreach
The recently concluded Magh Mela in Prayagraj has been hailed as a monumental success, not only for its spiritual significance but also as a vibrant platform for public awareness. The event witnessed an overwhelming participation of over 22 crore devotees who took holy dips in the sacred Ganga River, reaffirming its status as a major religious congregation.
Government Departments Leverage Mela for Public Engagement
Beyond its religious dimensions, the Magh Mela transformed into a significant avenue for government-citizen interaction. A total of 13 state and central government departments established dedicated camps and exhibitions within the mela premises. These initiatives collectively recorded an impressive footfall of over 17 lakh visitors, demonstrating the event's reach as a tool for disseminating information about various public schemes and programs.
Khadi Exhibitions Steal the Spotlight with Record Visits
Among all government-led efforts, the exhibitions and stalls managed by the khadi department emerged as the most popular attraction. They recorded the highest visitor count of more than 9 lakh people. Jawahar Lal Yadav, the in-charge of the Uttar Pradesh Divisional Khadi and Village Industries Exhibition at Parade Ground, provided detailed insights. He mentioned that the complex hosted more than 510 stalls representing over 350 institutions from nine different states, all aimed at promoting Khadi products and heritage.
"The daily footfall ranged between 35,000 to 40,000 visitors," Yadav noted. Since its inauguration on January 10, the exhibition complex welcomed over 8.40 lakh attendees, highlighting a sustained public interest.
Central Government's Swadeshi and Khadi Promotion Drive
In a parallel initiative, the central government set up a separate awareness camp at the Parade Ground specifically to promote khadi and swadeshi (indigenous) products. Camp in-charge KD Mishra reported that this venue featured more than 55 khadi stalls from seven states, including 38 institutions affiliated with the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). This exhibition, organized by the Central Khadi and Village Industries Commission, commenced on January 19 and, by February 1, had been visited by over 81,000 people.
Additional Highlights: Farmers' Fair and Tourism Boost
The Magh Mela also hosted the Virat Kisan Mela (Grand Farmers' Fair) from February 5 to February 9, which saw a substantial gathering of the agricultural community. More than 24,000 farmers registered their presence at this event, engaging with modern farming techniques and government agricultural schemes.
Furthermore, the tourism department capitalized on the influx of visitors by setting up four tourism information centres. Between January 3 and February 4, these centres recorded 3.46 lakh visitors, providing information on local attractions and promoting tourism in the region.
The Magh Mela's success story thus extends beyond its spiritual core, showcasing its role as a multifaceted event that bridges devotion with developmental outreach, benefiting millions of attendees.
