Karnataka Hotelier Acquires PM Modi's Warkari Pheta in E-Auction for Ganga Rejuvenation

S Prathap, who operates Roti Ghar in Chamarajanagar, emerged as the winning bidder for a Maharashtra Warkari Pheta—a traditional turban—that was worn by the Prime Minister during a significant religious ceremony.

The e-auction, organized by the Union Ministry of Culture, featured various mementos presented to PM Modi, with proceeds earmarked for the Namami Gange Project, aimed at cleaning and rejuvenating the Ganga River. Prathap participated in the auction two months ago and placed a winning bid of Rs 3,600 for the Warkari Pheta. This particular turban was donned by PM Modi during the inauguration of the Saint Tukaram Shila Mandir near Pune on June 14, 2022.
Prathap received his official auction winner's certificate from the Ministry of Culture, issued through joint secretary Mugdha Sinha, confirming his acquisition of this culturally significant item.

A Warkari Pheta holds deep religious importance as it is traditionally worn by followers of the Warkari sect, a devotional movement in Maharashtra dedicated to Lord Vitthal of Pandharpur. The turban acquired by Prathap features a Lord Vitthal motif, adding to its spiritual value.
In an interview with TOI, Prathap expressed his motivations for participating in the auction. "I am a fan of PM Modi, and a beneficiary of the MUDRA loan scheme. I started this eatery called Roti Ghar and became financially successful," he stated, highlighting how government initiatives have positively impacted his business.
He further elaborated, "As this Pheta also features a Lord Vitthal motif, as an ardent devotee of the deity and to contribute to the clean Ganga project, I participated in the e-auction." This dual inspiration—devotion to Lord Vitthal and support for environmental conservation—drove his successful bid.
