Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Heritage Walk Commemorates 360th Anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj's Historic Visit
A significant heritage walk has been organized in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to mark the 360th anniversary of the historic visit by the legendary Maratha king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The event, scheduled for Sunday morning, is a collaborative effort between the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
Event Details and Historical Significance
The heritage walk will commence at 7 am from Makai Gate, taking participants on a journey through the city's rich past. The route will pass through the historic Jaisingpura locality, where key landmarks will be highlighted, before concluding at the centuries-old Shri Jaisingh Shiv Temple located in Parakram Galli.
According to history scholar Sanket Kulkarni, who referenced archival records, Shivaji Maharaj visited Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar—then known as Aurangabad—during his journey to Agra following the Treaty of Purandar. "He departed from Raigad on March 5, 1666, and arrived in the city approximately a week later. During his stay, he resided at the encampment of Mirza Raja Jaisingh in Jaisingpura. Contemporary accounts describe large crowds gathering to catch a glimpse of the Maharaj," Kulkarni explained.
Musical Tribute and Community Engagement
To honor this 360-year milestone, the heritage walk will culminate with a musical tribute dedicated to Shivaji Maharaj, performed by the renowned ‘Nadgandharva' troupe. The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation has actively encouraged citizens to participate in large numbers, emphasizing that the event aims to reconnect residents with the city's profound historical legacy.
The civic body stated: "This heritage walk is not just a commemoration but an opportunity for the community to engage with and appreciate the historical significance of Shivaji Maharaj's visit, fostering a deeper connection to our cultural roots."
By organizing such events, authorities hope to promote awareness and preservation of local heritage, ensuring that future generations remain informed about pivotal moments in the region's history.
