In a significant religious development, the renowned Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple has selected its new melsanthi, or head priest, through a traditional draw of lots. The appointment marks a key transition in the temple's spiritual leadership.
Selection Process and Key Details
The new head priest is T M Narayanan Namboothiri, hailing from Cherpulassery in Palakkad district. His selection came after a rigorous process that saw 49 applicants vying for the prestigious position. Following initial screening, 35 candidates were deemed eligible for consideration.
The final selection was made through a draw of lots conducted on Wednesday, with the current melsanthi, Moorthiyedath Mana Sudhakaran Namboothiri, performing the ceremonial drawing. Narayanan Namboothiri is scheduled to assume his duties on March 31 night, beginning a six-month tenure as the temple's spiritual head.
Eligibility and Interview Process
The selection committee, led by temple tanthri P C Dineshan Namboothiripad, conducted interviews with all eligible candidates before proceeding to the lottery system. This two-stage process ensured that only qualified priests were considered for the final selection.
Among those present at the selection ceremony were Tanthri Krishnan Namboothiripad, Devaswom Chairman A V Gopinath, and administrative committee members including Mallissery Parameswaran Namboothiripad, C Manoj, and K S Balagopal.
