Goa Bishop Urges Faithful to Be Guardians of Creation at St. Francis Xavier Feast
Goa Bishop Calls for Environmental Guardianship at Feast

In a powerful homily that linked faith with environmental stewardship, Auxiliary Bishop Simiao Fernandes issued a clarion call to the faithful, urging them to become guardians of a creation suffering from human greed. The message was delivered during the solemn Eucharistic celebration for the feast of St. Francis Xavier at Old Goa on Wednesday.

A Call to Protect God's Creation

Bishop Fernandes expressed deep concern, stating that hope for the environment is weakening due to the extensive damage caused by human actions. He painted a vivid picture of a groaning creation, referencing St. Paul's letter to the Romans, and said the words felt profoundly relevant today. He directly called on the congregation to refrain from destroying God's creations.

The bishop specifically pointed to dug-up hills, deforested green areas, and rampant air and water pollution as blemishes on God's beautiful work. He emphasized the need for the equitable and prudent use of natural resources, framing environmental protection as a core religious duty.

A Gathering of Dignitaries and Devotees

The packed pandal erected outside the historic Bom Jesus Basilica witnessed a significant gathering. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, several ministers, legislators, and other dignitaries joined thousands of devotees and pilgrims from across the region. They all listened as Fernandes delivered his strong yet tactful message on the feast day, which capped off an equally hectic nine-day novena.

This year's celebration held special significance as it followed the decennial Exposition of the relics of the Spanish saint. The theme, 'Hope does not disappoint us; hence, like St. Francis Xavier, let us be pilgrims of hope', resonated through the bishop's environmental plea.

Liturgical Developments and Celebrations

The feast Mass was concelebrated by Archbishop Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrao, Bishop Emeritus of Port Blair Alex Dias, the rector of Bom Jesus Basilica Fr Patricio Fernandes, and other priests. Following the Mass, two significant publications were released:

  • A new Roman Konkani Missal prepared by the liturgical committee under the guidance of Fr Afonso Mendonca.
  • A liturgical music book prepared by the Diocesan Commission for Sacred Music, headed by Fr Simon D'Cunha and his team.

The buzz of activity in Old Goa peaked on the feast day, with thousands thronging the streets and exploring the colourfully done-up stalls in the extensive fair around the church complex, marking a vibrant end to the religious festivities.
