Sudden Cardiac Arrest Leads to Demise

He was immediately rushed to the hospital, but his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he suffered a cardiac arrest. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he was declared dead around 5 am on Thursday.

A Towering Figure in Odisha's Folk Art Landscape

A towering figure in the state's folk art landscape, Das was conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2020. This recognition honored his six-decade-long dedication to preserving and popularizing the vibrant Ghoda Nacha dance form. He was also previously honored by the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi for his outstanding contribution to traditional performing arts.

Life Dedicated to Ghoda Nacha Tradition

Born in Tangimania village and raised in Choudwar, Das discovered his passion for Ghoda Nacha while studying in Class 8. He resolved to dedicate his entire life to this art form. Known for its colorful costumes and stylized imitation of horse movements, Ghoda Nacha is deeply embedded in Odisha's rural cultural traditions.

At a time when the form faced dwindling patronage, Das emerged as its strongest torchbearer. He trained generations of artists and successfully took the performance to national platforms, ensuring its survival and recognition.

National Recognition and Political Tributes

His relentless efforts earned him national recognition, including a memorable interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a visit to Cuttack. The veteran artiste was honored for his immense contribution to India's folk culture during this event.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed profound grief over his demise. In an official statement, Majhi said he was "deeply saddened" by the passing of the Padma Shri awardee. He added that Das's monumental contribution to enriching Odisha's folk heritage would always be remembered with great respect. The Chief Minister extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
