Gaza Conflict Photography Exhibition Opens in Thiruvananthapuram

A compelling photographic exhibition that documents everyday existence amidst the devastating conflict in Gaza will be showcased at the Fine Arts College Gallery in Thiruvananthapuram from Sunday through January 31. The exhibition, titled 'The Last Sky', presents a poignant visual narrative captured by Dr Santhosh Kumar S S, who previously led the United Nations emergency medical team in Palestine.

Inauguration and Distinguished Presence

The exhibition will be formally inaugurated by Finance Minister K N Balagopal at 5:30 PM on Sunday. The function will be presided over by Fine Arts College Principal Manoj Kannan, adding institutional significance to this important cultural event. This gathering of prominent figures underscores the exhibition's relevance and the serious attention it commands within both artistic and humanitarian circles.

The Photographer: A Humanitarian Veteran

Dr Santhosh Kumar, currently serving as a professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, brings extensive international humanitarian experience to his photographic work. His career spans nearly 50 countries, where he has operated in conflict zones, disaster-affected regions, and areas experiencing civil unrest through various international humanitarian organizations.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr Santhosh played a crucial role in establishing special hospitals in both Kasaragod and Mumbai, demonstrating his commitment to medical crisis response. More recently, after completing service in the war zone of Ukraine, he arrived in Gaza for the first time in November 2023, where he began documenting the human experience of conflict using his mobile phone.

The Exhibition: Curated Selection from Conflict Zones

From approximately 2,000 photographs taken during his humanitarian missions, Dr Santhosh has carefully selected 60 images for this exhibition. These photographs collectively portray the complex realities of life in Gaza, capturing moments of:

  • Survival against overwhelming odds
  • Profound suffering caused by conflict
  • Remarkable resilience demonstrated by civilians

Each photograph will be accompanied by brief contextual descriptions that explain the circumstances and background of the captured moments. These annotations will provide visitors with deeper insight into the situations depicted, transforming the exhibition from mere visual display to an educational experience about humanitarian crises.

Accessibility and Public Engagement

The exhibition maintains an open-door policy, with free entry for all members of the public. This accessibility ensures that the powerful messages contained within these images can reach a broad audience, fostering greater awareness and understanding of the human impact of the Gaza conflict beyond traditional news reporting.

Through 'The Last Sky', Dr Santhosh Kumar bridges his medical humanitarian work with artistic expression, creating a unique platform that documents, educates, and potentially inspires reflection on one of the most pressing international conflicts of our time.
