Eid-al-Fitr Celebrations Bring Joy and Unity to Meghalaya

Eid-al-Fitr was celebrated with immense religious fervor and communal joy on Saturday across the state of Meghalaya. Muslim faithful gathered in large numbers at mosques and idgahs to offer namaz, marking the end of Ramadan with prayers, greetings, and the sharing of sweets.

Madina Masjid: The Iconic Glass Mosque Shines

The iconic Madina Masjid, popularly known as the 'glass mosque' in the Laban locality of Shillong, became a focal point of the celebrations. This architectural marvel, standing 120 feet tall beside the Umshyrpi stream, is regarded as the first and only glass mosque in the entire country. During Eid, it was abuzz with worshippers and visitors from diverse faiths, all admiring its serene beauty and unique design.

The mosque features a separate enclosure for women and also houses an orphanage and a library, serving as a community hub. While prayers were offered at the adjoining idgah, numerous tourists thronged the premises to witness the grand glass structure, which was splendidly illuminated in the evening for the festive occasion.

Widespread Celebrations Across Shillong and Beyond

Large congregations marked the festival at idgahs in various localities of the capital city, including Laban, Fire Brigade, and Police Bazar. Scenic spots, hotels, restaurants, and eateries across Shillong and beyond bustled with Eid revellers, while streets overflowed with people and vehicles in a celebratory mood.

True to Shillong's cosmopolitan character, residents from all sections of society joined the festivities, exchanging warm greetings and sharing in the joy of the occasion. Reports of peaceful and joyous celebrations came in from across the state, including the Garo Hills region, which has a sizeable Muslim population.

Extending greetings on social media, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, "Sending warm wishes of peace, joy, and prosperity to all celebrating Eid. May this special occasion bring you and your loved ones happiness and blessings." His message was accompanied by hashtags #EidAlFitr and #EidMubarak, reflecting the spirit of unity and festivity.

The celebrations highlighted the cultural diversity and harmony in Meghalaya, with the Madina Masjid standing as a symbol of architectural innovation and religious inclusivity. The event underscored the state's ability to blend tradition with modernity, bringing people together in a shared experience of faith and community.
