Women groups in Dharwad came together on Wednesday to celebrate Makara Sankranti in a truly traditional manner. They organized special fairs at Sadhankeri, bringing the community alive with the spirit of the harvest festival.
Folk Performances and Rituals
The Janapada Samshodhana Samsthe played a key role in these celebrations. Women presented vibrant folk songs and dances, highlighting the cultural importance of Makara Sankranti. They performed the sacred Ganga Puja, a ritual that honors the river goddess.
Participants exchanged ellu-bella, a traditional mix of sesame seeds and jaggery, while greeting each other warmly. This custom symbolizes sweetness and prosperity for the new season.
Traditional Feast Prepared by Women
The women prepared an elaborate feast featuring numerous traditional dishes. They cooked madli, holige, and sajji rotti. Chapati, yennegai, and junaka vade were also part of the spread.
Other delicacies included pundi palya, gurellu chutney, and lemon rice. Malike kaalu palya, curd, and agasi chutney added to the festive meal. Everyone enjoyed this feast together, strengthening community bonds.
