The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi in Karnataka ushered in the New Year 2026 with a vibrant mix of devotion, music, food, and community gatherings. From the afternoon of December 31st, public spaces, especially the scenic beaches, witnessed a significant surge in visitors as families and friends came together to celebrate.
Beaches, Eateries, and Malls Buzzing with Activity
Popular hangout spots across the region were brimming with energy. A large number of people flocked to restaurants, shopping malls, and other favourite outdoor venues to mark the occasion. The demand for celebrations was high, with organised events seeing tremendous response.
Damodar Shetty, a partner at Prestige Hotels in Mangaluru, reported excellent bookings for their indoor event, with all tables fully occupied from the morning itself. Echoing this sentiment, Mark Fernandes of Stonebridge Entertainment, who organised an event near the Maravoor Bridge, stated that all tickets were sold out by noon. According to local stakeholders, more than 20 mega events were held across the undivided coastal districts, each experiencing robust attendance and bookings.
Prayers and Solemn Observances for the Faithful
For the Catholic community, the day held deep religious significance as the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. Churches across Dakshina Kannada district conducted special prayers, adoration sessions, and Holy Mass to mark the occasion. The services typically commenced around 7 pm with adoration, followed by the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, allowing devotees to begin the new year with blessings and reflection.
Authorities Ensure Guidelines are Followed
Amidst the festivities, the excise and police departments were vigilant to ensure a safe and orderly celebration. Strict directives were issued to all event organisers and venues to adhere to the official guidelines for New Year's Eve. Bindushree P, the Deputy Commissioner of the excise department for DK, confirmed that approximately nine CL-9 licences were issued specifically for the New Year's Eve celebrations, regulating the events.
The successful and largely peaceful transition into 2026 in these coastal districts highlighted the community's spirit, blending tradition with contemporary celebrations, all under the watchful eye of local authorities.
