The festive spirit of Christmas has enveloped Mizoram, with its capital Aizawl radiating joy, religious reverence, and remarkable acts of charity. The celebrations, marked by carol singing and community gatherings, have seen a significant focus on giving, with large-scale donations reaching hospitals and underprivileged families across the city.
Festive Streets and a Chief Minister's Parade
The heart of Aizawl transformed into a vibrant pedestrian zone on Tuesday and Wednesday, with vehicles making way for people in festive attire. Adding to the merriment, a colorful Christmas costume parade was led by the state's Chief Minister, Lalduhoma. Residents, dressed in various costumes including Santa Claus, thronged the streets, which were beautifully adorned with lights for the season. Christmas shopping also peaked during this period, adding to the bustling atmosphere.
Major Charity Drive: Over ₹13 Lakh Distributed to Hospitals and Poor
The true essence of Christmas shone through substantial charitable efforts. Different corps of the Salvation Army’s Eastern Territory organized a Red Kettle Service, playing music across Aizawl to collect donations. Their initiative raised an impressive sum of over ₹13 lakh.
On Wednesday, this fund was put to compassionate use. The Salvation Army handed over ₹1 lakh each to the Civil Hospital in Aizawl and the Zoram Medical College & Hospital at Falkawn. Furthermore, over ₹84,000 was donated to the Mizoram Cancer hospital. The largest portion, over ₹10 lakh, was distributed to numerous poor people selected by units of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) in various localities of Aizawl.
Community-Led Outreach and Solemn Observances
Beyond organized charities, the spirit of giving permeated the community. Other organizations, friend groups, and individuals reached out to the needy, distributing cash, blankets, garments, and food. Special attention was given to drug addicts found roaming and sleeping on pedestrian footpaths. As night fell on Christmas Eve, the air filled with the ringing of church bells. Prayers and worship services were held in all local churches, uniting different denominations in solemn celebration.
The celebrations in Aizawl have thus beautifully blended festive joy with deep religious observance and a powerful commitment to social welfare, setting a profound example of the Christmas spirit in action.
