The serene Sunday morning atmosphere of Pune was temporarily transformed by the distinctive rumble of Italian-engineered motors as the Bombay Fiat Club commemorated its second anniversary in a grand and traditional fashion. This remarkable gathering featured an impressive assembly of 118 painstakingly restored Fiat automobiles, each radiating timeless vintage appeal and nostalgic charm.
A Club Built on Passion and Legacy
Established in early 2024 with the primary mission of safeguarding the rich legacy of the iconic Premier Padmini and its esteemed predecessors, the Fiat 1100 series, the Bombay Fiat Club has rapidly evolved into a fundamental pillar of India's classic automobile community. The club's philosophy is refreshingly simple and inclusive: there are no registration fees or formal membership procedures. Ownership of a Fiat vehicle serves as the sole entry pass, welcoming all enthusiasts into the fold.
Sambit Patnaik, the visionary founder of the Bombay Fiat Club, emphasized the deeper significance of their collective endeavor. "This year, we proudly welcomed 118 entries, potentially marking one of the largest congregations of Fiat cars ever witnessed in the nation. For us, this transcends mere hobbyism; it represents a solemn duty of custodianship—preserving these automotive treasures for future generations," Patnaik stated with evident pride.
An Exquisite Parade of Automotive History
The anniversary celebration presented a diverse and rare lineup of classic models, captivating attendees and photographers alike. Highlights included the diminutive yet iconic Fiat 500 Topolino, the elegant Millecento, along with Select, Super Select, President, Padmini, and Premier 118 NE variants. Beyond the visual splendor of gleaming chrome accents and soft pastel paint finishes, the event functioned as a crucial hub for the exchange of specialized knowledge, rare spare parts, and technical expertise among dedicated owners and restorers.
Notable exhibits featured the rugged Fiat Campagnola, a heavy-duty off-roader, and the photogenic Fiat 500 Giardiniera. The classic Premier Padmini, often remembered in vibrant yellow, stood as a crowd favorite, symbolizing an era of Indian automotive history.
Driving Community and Personal Connections
Neville Gandhi, co-founder and a passionate advocate for the club, shared the core motivation behind the event. "Our fundamental idea was to motivate Fiat owners to bring their cars out onto the roads and keep them running. We witnessed incredible participation, with enthusiasts traveling from Pune and Mumbai, and some making the long journey all the way from Goa and Hyderabad," Gandhi explained, highlighting the event's wide-reaching appeal.
Personal stories of connection to the Fiat brand added emotional depth to the gathering. Participant Yogesh Raut recounted his lifelong bond with the marque. "My association with Fiat began in 1994 through my uncle's car, which was unfortunately sold later. It's a brand that grows on you. Consequently, I purchased a 1987 model Premier Padmini and am currently engaged in restoring a friend's 1955 Fiat," Raut shared, illustrating the enduring personal attachments these vehicles inspire.
The event, which also paid homage to the legacy of the Premier 118 NE, successfully brought together 118 vintage models in a stunning display of automotive heritage and communal passion, reinforcing the Bombay Fiat Club's vital role in India's classic car culture.
