Assam's Asharikandi Terracotta to Shine at 2026 Republic Day Parade
Assam Terracotta Gets 2026 Republic Day Tableau Slot

In a significant recognition for Assam's traditional arts, the renowned terracotta craft from Asharikandi in Dhubri district has been selected for a tableau in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi in 2026. This comes as a moment of pride after the state was notably absent from the parade's tableau display in 2025.

A Canvas of Clay and Self-Reliance

The proposed tableau will vividly depict the journey of the men and women artisans from the Asharikandi cluster of villages. It aims to highlight how these skilled individuals have achieved economic self-sufficiency under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, meticulously crafting clay dolls by hand. Simultaneously, their work plays a crucial role in preserving one of Assam's richest cultural legacies for future generations.

Official Confirmation and Project Details

Speaking to TOI, Binoy Bhattacharjee, the director of the North East Craft And Rural Development Organisation (Necardo), confirmed the development. He expressed that this selection is a tremendous matter of pride for the terracotta artisans and the people of Dhubri district as a whole.

"The tableau in the parade will showcase the evolution of terracotta and how it has flourished in the nook and corner of the country," Bhattacharjee stated. He provided further insight into the logistical preparations, revealing that the state cultural affairs department has already floated a tender with a budget of Rs 40 lakh. A Delhi-based agency has been offered the contract to execute the work, which will be centered around the theme of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

From Local Art to National Stage

This announcement marks a pivotal moment for the terracotta artisans of Asharikandi. Their craft, traditionally confined to local markets and cultural appreciation within the region, is now set to receive unparalleled national exposure on January 26, 2026. The tableau on Rajpath will not just be a display of art but a narrative of empowerment, tradition, and indigenous skill.

The selection underscores the government's focus on promoting indigenous crafts and the stories of grassroots entrepreneurship that align with the vision of a self-reliant India. For Assam, it ensures the state's vibrant cultural tapestry is represented on the country's most prestigious patriotic platform, turning a page from the disappointment of the previous year.
