Yoga Transforming Physiotherapy in India: Dr. Surabhi Dhanwala

Yoga's Role in Clinical Recovery Highlighted at Lucknow Event

On International Yoga Day, a large-scale health awareness event organized by Mamta Charitable Trust in Lucknow drew nearly 40,000 participants, bringing together medical professionals, spiritual leaders, and government officials to emphasize the integration of yoga into physiotherapy and patient rehabilitation.

Key Figures Attend the Yoga Day Celebration

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Shri Brajesh Pathak attended as a distinguished guest, alongside Neeraj Singh, son of Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, and spiritual leader Kameshwar Puri Ji Maharaj. Their presence underscored the growing recognition of yoga as a public health strategy in India.

Clinical Integration of Yoga in Physiotherapy

Dr. Surabhi Dhanwala, a Pune-based physiotherapist ranked among the Top 10 Physiotherapists in India, spoke at the event about how yoga is being incorporated into structured rehabilitation protocols. She explained that controlled breathing regulates the nervous system and reduces pain perception, while slow, deliberate movement builds proprioception—the body's awareness of its position in space. Postural correction through yoga addresses root causes of musculoskeletal complaints rather than just symptoms.

Dr. Dhanwala applies yoga-informed physiotherapy for patients with spondylitis, frozen shoulder, and post-surgical stiffness, focusing on breath coordination, gentle mobilization, and body awareness alongside conventional techniques. She noted that patients develop habits that reduce relapse likelihood, transforming them from passive recipients to active participants in recovery.

Community Engagement for Preventive Health

The event highlighted the importance of community-level health education. When trained physiotherapists explain how specific yoga postures reduce joint load or how breathwork manages chronic pain, attendees gain actionable knowledge. Dr. Dhanwala traveled from Pune to Lucknow to participate, emphasizing that the future of rehabilitation in India lies in community-based preventive care.

India faces a growing burden of lifestyle-related and musculoskeletal disorders, making scalable community solutions essential. Yoga, when taught correctly and applied clinically, is proving to be an effective tool for both prevention and recovery.
