The northeast regional chess and yoga meet, hosted by Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Rangia in Kamrup, brought together young talents from over 100 JNVs across the northeast to compete in events testing both mental and physical skills.
Event Overview
The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti Shillong Region Chess & Yoga Meet 2026 was held from April 26 to 28 as a three-day programme where students competed in mind and body disciplines, promoting concentration, strategy, physical fitness and sportsmanship. A total of 260 selected students from 106 JNVs under the Shillong region took part.
Chess and Yoga Categories
Chess competitions were held in six categories — Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 for both boys and girls. Yoga events included individual, artistic pair, rhythmic pair and group performances for boys and girls.
Inauguration and Activities
The meet was inaugurated by chief guest Sister B D’Costa, principal of Fatima Convent English School, Rangia. In her address, the chief guest said chess sharpens the mind while yoga strengthens the body, and encouraged students to uphold discipline and fair play.
The programme also featured a march-past by contingents from all 106 schools, an oath-taking ceremony and a yoga demonstration by the host school.
This event not only provided a platform for students to showcase their talents but also fostered a spirit of healthy competition and camaraderie among the participating institutions. The integration of chess and yoga highlighted the importance of holistic development, emphasizing both intellectual and physical well-being.
