Kerala Launches Center of Excellence in Nutraceuticals to Drive Health Innovation

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan virtually inaugurated a Center of Excellence in Nutraceuticals (CoEN) at the Bio 360 Life Sciences Park in Thonnakkal on Monday. This strategic initiative, led by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), aims to establish Kerala as a premier hub for research and innovation in the rapidly growing nutraceutical sector.

Government and Institutional Support

The project receives robust support from the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC) and the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), with significant financial backing from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). This collaborative effort underscores the state's commitment to advancing science-based preventive healthcare.

In his address, Chief Minister Vijayan emphasized the global importance of nutraceuticals in tackling contemporary health issues. "Bioactive compounds from food are crucial for boosting immunity, preventing diseases, and managing chronic conditions. The establishment of this center marks a key milestone in Kerala's journey to enhance preventive healthcare through scientific innovation," he stated.

Infrastructure and Phased Implementation

The center has commenced operations at the Institute of Advanced Virology (IAV) campus within the Bio 360 Life Sciences Park, with an allocated 5 acres of land dedicated to developing specialized infrastructure. The project is structured in phases, with KIIFB sanctioning Rs 13.99 crore over a five-year period to ensure sustainable growth and impact.

Strategic Roadmap and Industry Collaboration

E Sreekumar, Chief Executive Officer of CoEN, outlined the institutional roadmap, detailing a two-phase approach:

  1. Phase 1: Focus on research, technology development, and scientific validation of nutraceutical formulations, particularly targeting metabolic health and wellness.
  2. Phase 2: Establishment of an enterprise division to facilitate manufacturing, technology transfer, and commercialization of research outcomes through partnerships with industry stakeholders.

Expert Endorsement and Economic Impact

In a keynote address, C Anantharamakrishnan, Director of CSIR–NIIST, praised the Kerala government for its proactive initiatives in promoting science, research, and innovation. He highlighted that such efforts are essential for strengthening the state's emerging bioeconomy and nutraceutical sector, positioning Kerala competitively in the global market.

This launch represents a significant step forward in Kerala's strategy to leverage its scientific capabilities for economic and health benefits, fostering innovation that addresses modern health challenges while driving regional development.
