As a severe winter wave sweeps across the region, the Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park, widely known as Bokaro Zoo, has rolled out a comprehensive and thoughtful strategy to ensure the well-being of its animal residents. The zoo authorities are implementing a dual approach focusing on artificial heating and enhanced nutrition to protect the diverse species from the biting cold.
Boosting Immunity Through Strategic Nutrition
The drop in mercury has prompted the zoo management to fortify the diets of its more vulnerable inhabitants. Manikant Dhan, Chief of Communication at BSL, explained that special measures are in place. "For animals sensitive to the cold, like leopards and blackbucks, we are adding calcium and vitamins to their regular feed," Dhan stated. These nutritional supplements are meticulously mixed with their daily meals to boost their immunity systems during the challenging winter months, ensuring the animals consume them without difficulty.
Creating Warmth with Heaters and Special Diets
Beyond dietary changes, the zoo has installed practical heating solutions across various enclosures. Room heaters have been fitted in the leopards' areas to maintain a cozy and warm environment for the big cats. The Himalayan bear is receiving particular attention; its diet now includes honey, a natural agent believed to help generate body warmth. Furthermore, as evenings grow colder, the staff lights firewood in specific enclosures to combat the dropping temperatures effectively.
Protecting Smaller Creatures and Maximizing Sunlight
The care extends to the park's smaller animals and birds. Aviaries have been covered with protective curtains to shield birds from cold winds. For creatures like snakes, civets, and various birds, straw bedding has been added to their enclosures to provide insulation from the cold ground. In a simple yet effective natural measure, tree branches around the enclosures have been trimmed. This allows maximum sunlight to penetrate during the day, providing natural warmth and comfort to the animals.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park is home to nearly two dozen species, including notable animals like leopards, blackbucks, Himalayan bears, and hippopotamuses. This proactive winter care initiative underscores the zoo's commitment to animal welfare, ensuring all residents remain healthy and comfortable until warmer weather returns.
