A pregnant woman gave birth to a baby girl inside an auto-rickshaw parked outside the Emergency Ward of the Civil Hospital in Khanna, Punjab, on June 27, 2026. The incident occurred after the woman, a resident of Avtar Nagar on Lalheri Road, experienced sudden labour pains.
Husband Hired Auto Due to Lack of Ambulance Awareness
Her husband, Pahadu, hired an auto-rickshaw from Lalheri Chowk to rush her to the hospital. The auto driver reported that he transported the couple from a distance of approximately 1.5 kilometers. As the vehicle entered the hospital premises and stopped near the emergency ward, the woman delivered the baby inside the auto.
According to hospital officials, the family members immediately alerted the hospital staff, who responded promptly. The emergency team safely shifted the mother and newborn from the auto-rickshaw to the labour room using a wheelchair.
Mother and Baby in Stable Condition
Doctors at Civil Hospital Khanna confirmed that both the mother and the newborn girl are stable and healthy. The hospital provided necessary postnatal care.
The husband admitted that he was unaware of the government's free 108 ambulance service, which led him to hire the auto-rickshaw. He urged others to be aware of such services to avoid similar emergencies.
Hospital Staff Praised for Quick Response
Hospital authorities praised the emergency team for their swift action in ensuring the safety of the mother and child. The incident highlights the importance of awareness about emergency medical services in the region.
