The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), a prominent farmers' body, has announced its support for the nationwide strike called by workers at Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) worksites on May 15. The strike is organized to demand an increase in wages and improved working conditions for laborers employed under the rural job scheme.
Background of the Strike
Workers across multiple states have been protesting against the current wage rates under NREGA, which they argue are insufficient to meet rising living costs. The strike on May 15 aims to pressurize the government to revise wages and ensure timely payment. The SKM, which led the year-long agitation against the now-repealed farm laws, has pledged solidarity with the workers.
SKM's Statement
In a statement released on Monday, the SKM said, 'We stand firmly with the NREGA workers in their legitimate demand for higher wages. The government must address their grievances immediately.' The farmers' body has urged its members and supporters to join the strike and participate in local protests.
The strike is expected to witness participation from thousands of workers in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha. Activists have planned rallies and sit-ins at district headquarters to draw attention to their demands.
Government Response
So far, the central government has not issued an official response to the strike call. However, sources indicate that the Ministry of Rural Development is reviewing the wage structure under NREGA. The scheme, which guarantees 100 days of wage employment per year to rural households, has been a key social safety net, especially during the pandemic.
The SKM's support adds momentum to the workers' movement, as the farmers' body has a strong grassroots network. The strike is also being supported by various trade unions and civil society groups.
