Raj Bhavan Opens Doors for Special Children's Day Celebration
The iconic Shillong Raj Bhavan became a venue of joy and inclusion on Friday as it hosted a unique Children's Day celebration specifically organized for differently abled children. The special program, held in the fore-lawns of the governor's official residence, was conducted in collaboration with the state social welfare department.
Governor's Personal Participation
Governor Chandrashekhar H Vijayashankar, accompanied by his wife, personally attended the event and interacted with the children. The gathering included social welfare director Camelia Doreen Lyngwa, department officials, caregivers, and children from various schools across the state.
Governor Vijayashankar extended warm greetings to all the children present and emphasized the significance of celebrating Children's Day with those living with physical challenges. He described the occasion as particularly meaningful for the Raj Bhavan, which had the privilege of hosting children with diverse needs and abilities.
Focus on Visual Impairment and Medical Support
During his address, the governor highlighted an important medical possibility for some children who have lost their eyesight due to accidents or medical conditions. He stressed that many children still have the possibility of regaining their vision through proper medical intervention and donor support.
In a significant administrative move, Governor Vijayashankar directed the social welfare department to compile a detailed list of all visually impaired children in Meghalaya. This comprehensive registry will include both children blind from birth and those who lost their vision later in life, enabling the government to explore suitable measures to help them.
Towards Inclusive Development
The event marked a special moment in Shillong Raj Bhavan's history, transforming the usually formal premises into a space of laughter and celebration. The collaboration between the Raj Bhavan and the social welfare department demonstrated the state's commitment to inclusive development and equal opportunities for all children.
The governor's initiative to create a state-wide registry of visually impaired children represents a concrete step toward addressing specific challenges faced by differently abled children in Meghalaya. This data-driven approach will help authorities design targeted interventions and connect children with appropriate medical and support services.
