The Punjab government has significantly broadened the scope of pregnancy-related healthcare services available at its network of Aam Aadmi Clinics. Official data reveals a notable surge in the utilization of ante-natal care across the state within just four months of launching this expanded initiative.
Addressing Critical Maternal Health Gaps
This push comes against the backdrop of concerning maternal health indicators in Punjab. The state records approximately 4.3 lakh pregnancies every year. Prior to this expansion, government figures indicated that fewer than 70% of pregnant women received a first antenatal check-up, and less than 60% completed the recommended four visits. Furthermore, Punjab's maternal mortality ratio stands at 90 per one lakh live births, which is above the national average, underscoring urgent needs in regular monitoring and timely medical referrals.
Comprehensive Services and Widespread Impact
Under the enhanced model, Aam Aadmi Clinics now provide a wide array of essential ante-natal tests. These include blood tests, screenings for sugar, thyroid, haemoglobin, HIV, and syphilis, along with foetal heart rate assessments. When an ultrasound is necessary, doctors at the clinics issue referral slips. These slips enable women to get the scans done free of cost at nearly 500 government-empanelled private diagnostic centres, where the market price typically ranges from Rs 800 to Rs 2,000.
The results have been substantial. According to the government, more than 10,000 pregnant women have received free ultrasound scans in this short period. Currently, about 20,000 expectant mothers visit these clinics monthly for pregnancy-related check-ups. This system has proven crucial for early detection, helping officials identify around 5,000 high-risk pregnancies every month. This allows for prompt follow-up and referral to higher-level medical facilities when required.
Financial Relief and Improved Access
The initiative is also providing significant economic relief to families. The government estimates that the free ultrasound services alone have resulted in savings of about Rs 1 crore for citizens so far. With 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics forming the backbone of Punjab's primary healthcare network, the expansion is strategically designed to bring essential services closer to people's homes.
State Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized that the move aims to improve access and reduce the burden on larger, overcrowded hospitals. The government's ongoing focus remains on improving coverage, enabling early diagnosis, and ensuring continuity of care for both mothers and newborns throughout Punjab.
