Patna Health Experts Champion Prenatal Screening for Congenital Heart Disease
Health experts in Patna convened on Saturday to highlight the vital importance of timely detection of congenital heart disease through routine ultrasound screening of pregnant women. They emphasized that early diagnosis is a life-saving measure for children, enabling proactive treatment and management strategies.
Call for Mandatory Level-2 Ultrasound Screening
Addressing a seminar focused on congenital heart disease, Dr. Rajeev Ranjan Prasad, director of Mahavir Vatsalya Hospital, issued a strong recommendation. He urged that every pregnant woman undergo a level-2 ultrasound examination. This advanced screening is crucial for identifying potential heart abnormalities in the fetus, which allows for early treatment planning and ensures safer delivery management.
Dr. Prasad underscored the global significance of this issue, noting that a worldwide child heart disease awareness programme is observed annually from February 7 to February 14. This initiative aims to raise public consciousness about congenital heart disease and the urgent need for prompt medical intervention.
Alarming Prevalence and Public Health Priority
Experts estimate that congenital heart disease affects approximately 2% of the population, making it a substantial public health concern. This statistic underscores why early screening and timely referral to specialists are considered major priorities in healthcare systems.
Recognizing Warning Signs in Children
Dr. Prabhat Kumar, head of the pediatric echocardiography department, provided detailed guidance on identifying warning signs in children. He advised that symptoms such as bluish discolouration of the body or lips during crying, repeated respiratory infections, breathlessness, restlessness, or a rapid heartbeat should never be ignored. Immediate heart screening is essential if any of these signs are present.
Training Initiatives to Enhance Early Detection
To bolster efforts in early identification and care, Mahavir Vatsalya Hospital conducted special training sessions for 50 nurses. This programme focused on equipping healthcare professionals with the skills needed for early detection and effective management of congenital heart disease, thereby strengthening the overall treatment pathway.
