Kerala Health Department Organizes Major Medical Camp for Migrant Workers in Perumbavoor
In response to growing concerns about increasing HIV positive cases among migrant labourers in Perumbavoor, the health department, in collaboration with the Kerala State AIDS Control Society (KSACS), organized a comprehensive medical camp on Sunday. Approximately 3,000 migrant workers participated in the event, which aimed to address critical health issues and provide essential services.
Arogyolsavam 2026: A Multi-Departmental Health Initiative
The camp, named Arogyolsavam 2026, saw active participation from various government departments, highlighting a coordinated effort to support the migrant community. A total of 21 awareness sessions were conducted, covering a wide range of topics to educate workers on healthy living practices and the legal support available to them. This initiative underscores the state's commitment to improving public health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
HIV Awareness and Safe Sex Practices Emphasized
During a key session on AIDS led by Dr. V Sam Prasad, the programme head of AHF India Cares, some migrant workers openly admitted to having multiple sexual partners. Dr. Prasad strongly advised them to adopt safe sex practices, particularly emphasizing the importance of using condoms to prevent the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Following the session, participants received free condoms to encourage the implementation of these recommendations.
Comprehensive Health Education and Screening
The camp featured awareness sessions on various health issues affecting migrant workers, including:
- Oral hygiene and dental care
- Menstrual hygiene for female workers
- Prevention and management of skin infections
- Immunization schedules for children
Many workers raised questions about tuberculosis, inquiring about symptoms, available treatments, and associated expenses, reflecting their concerns about accessing healthcare in a new environment. Health screenings were conducted on-site, and necessary medicines were distributed to those in need, ensuring immediate relief and support.
Background and Future Plans
The medical camp was organized in the wake of rising tensions in the area, where locals have expressed opposition to migrant workers due to issues such as drug abuse and involvement in flesh trade. KSACS sources have confirmed that they plan to continue holding similar camps for workers in the future, aiming to sustain health education and preventive measures. This proactive approach seeks to mitigate health risks and foster a safer community environment for all residents.
