A joint inspection of the Cutbona fishing jetty, conducted by the primary health centre in Balli at the request of Goacan and the Velim Civic and Consumer Forum, has highlighted serious health and hygiene deficiencies just before the new fishing season begins.
Toilet Facility Locked Due to Water Shortage
Goacan coordinator Roland Martins reported that the toilet facility at the newly inaugurated jetty, which was supposed to be offered free of charge, was found locked because of a water shortage. He warned that without proper water facilities, the entire fishing operation would face great difficulty, and workers would have to operate under jeopardized conditions. Martins urged the fisheries department to conduct a comprehensive review of water requirements at the jetty.
Safety Hazards and Neglected Infrastructure
The inspection team discovered welding and tank fabrication work being carried out inside mending sheds, which was flagged as a safety hazard that endangered workers. Sheds constructed under a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project were found abandoned and unlit. Additionally, the jetty was not being washed regularly, and waste collection was irregular. With no canteen or store on the premises, workers are forced to depend on illegal shops for basic necessities. Goacan recommended setting up a subsidised canteen and a small store at the jetty.
Health Recommendations for Workers
On the health front, the inspection team recommended establishing a weekly outpatient department (OPD) at the fisheries complex for workers, along with a heatwave advisory given the current weather conditions. Martins urged the fisheries department to draw up a roadmap before the fishing season begins to address these issues comprehensively.
