Jaipur Cracks Down: JMC Fines Vendors ₹2 Lakh in Tobacco Sale Drive
Jaipur JMC fines vendors ₹2 lakh in tobacco crackdown

The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has initiated a stringent, zone-by-zone crackdown targeting the illegal sale of tobacco products across the Pink City. The drive, which began on January 2, focuses on halting the sale of tobacco and other intoxicants, particularly in the vicinity of educational institutions.

Major Fines and Confiscations in Day One Action

On Friday, JMC teams from all 13 zones of the city swung into action, penalising numerous dairy booth operators, kiosk owners, and small vendors. JMC Commissioner Gaurav Saini reported that fines totalling approximately Rs 2 lakh were collected from these outlets for blatantly violating the rules. The enforcement action was not limited to monetary penalties.

"Tobacco products sold at these outlets were also confiscated and the operators were given a final warning," Commissioner Saini stated, emphasising the seriousness of the civic body's intent.

Zero Tolerance Near Schools: Licence Cancellation Threat

The corporation has drawn a strict red line around schools and other educational institutes. Any outlet found selling tobacco within a 100-metre radius of such institutions will face immediate cancellation of its licence. This decisive measure underscores the primary objective of the campaign.

"Our priority is to keep the surroundings of schools safe for children and protect them from the harmful effects of tobacco," Commissioner Saini added, highlighting the public health and child welfare motive behind the drive.

Surprise Inspections to Ensure Compliance

To ensure the crackdown is effective and that vendors cannot anticipate inspections, the JMC has decided to conduct raids randomly and without prior notice. This strategy aims to catch all illegal operators off guard and ensure sustained compliance with the law.

Saini confirmed that these surprise inspections would continue, allowing authorities to take prompt and effective action against any outlet flouting the tobacco sale ban near sensitive areas.
