The Madhya Pradesh government has taken swift financial action following a tragic diarrhoea outbreak in Indore, disbursing compensation to the grieving families. This move comes a week after Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced support for those affected by the suspected water contamination crisis in the city's Bhagirathpura area.
Compensation Disbursed Amid Ongoing Medical Probe
On Tuesday, the state authorities distributed cheques to the families of 18 individuals who died over the past two weeks. Indore collector Shivam Verma clarified the government's position to the Times of India. He stated that while a medical panel has so far conclusively linked only six of these deaths directly to contaminated drinking water, compensation was extended to all affected families considering the grave and sensitive nature of the situation.
"A panel of doctors is currently analysing every case to establish the exact cause of death," Verma explained. "However, this is a highly sensitive issue. We cannot wait for every clinical report to arrive before supporting these families. Therefore, we have released ₹2 lakh from the Red Cross Fund to the kin of all 18 people who died over the past two weeks, regardless of the final report."
Details of the Deceased and Distribution Method
The list of recipients includes some heart-rending cases. Among them is the family of five-month-old Avyan Sahu. The infant's mother had claimed he died after she mixed water with his milk. The list also includes nine women. Officials confirmed that all the deceased had been admitted to hospitals, with most succumbing while undergoing treatment.
Regarding the distribution process, of the 18 identified families, 15 received physical cheques in person. The payments for the remaining three families are being processed electronically via RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) for direct bank transfer. This action follows the December 30 directive from CM Mohan Yadav, who had pledged financial assistance for the kin of the deceased and free medical treatment for all those affected by the outbreak.
