The Union government on Thursday launched a nationwide free annual health checkup initiative for all workers aged 40 and above under the new labour codes, which were notified on November 21 last year. Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that these free checkups will be conducted annually across the country, emphasizing that early detection through health screenings can help prevent serious diseases. Treatment and medicines will be provided through ESIC facilities.
Expanded Coverage Under ESIC
Mandaviya stated that workers engaged in hazardous occupations and those working in establishments with fewer than 10 workers are now being brought under the coverage of the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). This expansion aims to ensure that more workers benefit from social security and healthcare provisions.
Key Provisions for Gender Equality
The minister highlighted several provisions under the new labour codes to promote gender equality in the workplace. These include ensuring equal wages for men and women, increasing maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks, and incorporating work-from-home provisions for women. These measures are designed to create a more inclusive and supportive work environment for female employees.
The initiative is part of the government's broader effort to implement the four labour codes, which consolidate and simplify 29 central labour laws. The codes cover wages, social security, industrial relations, and occupational safety, health, and working conditions. The free health checkup program is expected to benefit millions of workers across the country, improving their overall health and well-being.
