The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that conditions are favorable for further advance of the southwest monsoon into more parts of Maharashtra over the next four to five days. Pune may experience light rain with likely thunderstorms and lightning this week.
Monsoon Progress Across India
However, there is still time for the monsoon to completely set in over the state even as it advances into the remaining parts of Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, as well as some more parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and south Chhattisgarh, according to an IMD weather report.
Heatwave in Marathwada and Vidarbha
Marathwada and Vidarbha regions may witness hot weather, with heatwave conditions in isolated pockets over the next three to four days. IMD has said rain may occur in many locations across Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Konkan and Vidarbha during the week.
Normal Onset Dates
IMD officials said the normal onset of the monsoon begins in south Konkan (Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri) between June 7 and 8, before hitting Kolhapur on June 9, Pune on June 10, Mumbai on June 11 and Ahilyanagar on June 12. It typically reaches Marathwada, including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, by mid-June, covering north Maharashtra and Vidarbha, including Jalgaon and Nagpur, between June 15 and 18.
Pune Weather Forecast
The IMD has forecast rain for Pune this week and said the city would witness “mainly clear skies becoming partly cloudy towards the afternoon or evening” on Monday. It said that for the following three days, the city is likely to experience “mainly clear skies becoming partly cloudy towards the afternoon or evening, with thunderstorms, lightning and light rain likely.”
Weather Systems Across Country
A number of weather systems are present across the country currently, influencing both rainfall and heat, said IMD. These include a trough from the west-central Bay of Bengal off south coastal Andhra Pradesh to south Tamil Nadu, another trough from central Uttar Pradesh to north Madhya Maharashtra and a third trough from west Rajasthan to Gangetic West Bengal.
