The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted a massive crackdown on banned tobacco products between June 1 and 5, carrying out 195 raids across the state. The operation led to the seizure of illegal goods valued at approximately Rs 2 crore and the arrest of 192 individuals.
Konkan Division Leads in Raids
The highest number of enforcement actions took place in the Konkan division, where 79 raids were conducted and 78 people were taken into custody. This region has been a focal point in the fight against banned substances like gutkha, pan masala, and tobacco products.
Special Campaign by New FDA Commissioner
These raids are part of a special campaign initiated by the newly appointed FDA Commissioner, Tukaram Mundhe. The campaign targets the sale and distribution of prohibited items, with continuous operations in key regions including Mumbai, Konkan, Nagpur, and Amravati.
Breakdown of Raids by Region
According to departmental data, the raids were distributed across several cities: 30 raids were carried out in Mumbai, 15 in Nagpur, and nine in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. A total of 123 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered statewide in connection with these violations.
The FDA's intensified action underscores the commitment to curbing the illegal trade of harmful substances that pose serious health risks to the public.
