Diarrhoea Outbreak Strikes Srikakulam Town, Authorities Suspect Water Contamination
A concerning diarrhoea outbreak has been reported in Srikakulam town, located in the Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh, with 15 confirmed cases recorded as of Monday. The affected areas include Kaki Veedhi, Dammala Veedhi, Gudi Veedhi, and Manguvari Thota, where residents have fallen ill due to suspected water contamination.
Emergency Response and Medical Treatment Underway
Currently, nine individuals are receiving medical treatment in hospital settings. While their condition is reported as stable, they remain under close observation by healthcare professionals as a precautionary measure. Health officials and secretariat staff have proactively visited the impacted households to provide essential medical guidance and support to the affected families.
Water Safety Measures Implemented
Authorities have identified water contamination—likely caused by drainage water infiltrating local water supplies—as the primary suspected cause of the outbreak. In response, residents in the affected streets have been strongly advised against using municipal water for any purpose. They have been instructed to discard any stored water from the past two to three days to prevent further exposure.
The municipal corporation has mobilized to supply safe drinking water through tankers to the impacted neighborhoods. Additionally, residents are encouraged to consume packaged bottled water where it is readily available as an alternative safe option.
High-Level Government Review and Directives
State Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana conducted a thorough review of the situation, meeting with key officials including the district collector, district medical and health officer, and the city municipal commissioner. Minister Narayana directed the officials to launch an immediate investigation into the outbreak's causes, with a mandate to submit a detailed report. This report will determine whether the outbreak stemmed from contaminated water or other potential dietary factors.
On-Ground Actions and Public Health Advisories
District Collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar personally visited the affected areas to assess the situation and interact with residents. He urged the community to consume only boiled water as a critical safety measure. "All drinking water should be boiled before consumption to ensure safety," emphasized Collector Pundkar. "Any health concerns must be reported immediately to the Government General Hospital or nearby Primary Health Centers (PHCs). Municipal staff and health authorities will camp in these areas overnight to provide continuous support."
To bolster emergency response, two ambulances have been stationed in the vicinity to facilitate the swift transportation of patients if needed. A special ward has been opened at the Government General Hospital in Srikakulam to accommodate and treat additional cases efficiently.
Additional Ministerial Intervention
State Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu also reviewed the outbreak situation, underscoring the urgency of addressing infrastructure issues. He directed officials to carry out immediate repairs if sewage contamination is detected within the drinking water pipelines, aiming to prevent future incidents and safeguard public health.
