Dhanbad Women's Group Becomes Lifeline for Hospital Patients
In the heart of Dhanbad, a remarkable act of compassion has been quietly unfolding for the last couple of years. A local women-led organisation, Sewa aur Samarpan (Service and Devotion), has made it its mission to ensure that no patient or attendant at the Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH) goes hungry. Founded and led by the dedicated social worker Kajal Jha, this initiative has become a beacon of hope for many.
Addressing a Critical Need for Food and Shelter
Kajal Jha identified a severe gap in the support system for those traveling long distances for medical treatment. She explained that a significant number of patients arrive from remote districts such as Giridih, Jamtara, Deoghar, Dumka, and Godda. These individuals and their families face a dual battle: struggling for treatment while also grappling with basic survival needs like food and a place to sleep.
"While attendants sleep on hospital floors, they often have no access to proper food. That’s the core reason we started this initiative," Jha stated. The team of volunteers from Sewa aur Samarpan prepares and distributes freshly cooked meals daily, offering crucial nourishment to those who need it most.
Beyond Meals: The Vital Role of Blood Donation
The organisation's service extends far beyond providing food. Recognizing another critical challenge, the group actively organizes blood donation drives to assist patients during emergencies.
"Doctors often ask attendants to arrange blood, but since they are strangers in the city, this becomes a huge challenge," Kajal added. To bridge this gap, Sewa aur Samarpan coordinates with local blood banks, and its own members and volunteers step forward to donate blood, ensuring that this life-saving resource is available when needed.
The significance of their work was highlighted on Doctors' Day this year, when Dhanbad MLA Raj Sinha attended one of their blood donation camps. He praised the women, calling their efforts a "true selfless service" and a "remarkable example of humanity."
A Powerful Example of Community and Compassion
Operating with minimal resources but maximum devotion, Sewa aur Samarpan has firmly established itself as a lifeline for underprivileged patients at SNMMCH. Their sustained effort over years demonstrates the profound impact a community-driven initiative can have. They are not just providing meals and blood; they are restoring dignity and offering comfort in times of immense distress, setting a powerful example for others to follow.
