In a landmark move for maternal and infant health in Jharkhand, the district administration of Chatra inaugurated the state's first-ever Mother Special Newborn Care Unit (MSNCU) on Tuesday. The pioneering facility, established at Chatra Sadar Hospital, is designed to revolutionize care for vulnerable newborns and their mothers by keeping them together from the very beginning.
A Pioneering Step in Integrated Mother-Newborn Care
The unit was officially launched by a group of distinguished officials, including Chatra MP Kalicharan Singh, Simaria MLA Kumar Ujjwal, Chatra MLA Janardan Paswan, and Deputy Commissioner Kirtishiree G. This initiative marks a significant shift from traditional neonatal care by implementing an Immediate Kangaroo Mother Care (i-KMC) and a strict zero-separation policy. This means that mothers and their babies, especially those born preterm or weighing less than 1800 grams, will receive treatment and monitoring side-by-side without being separated.
Deputy Commissioner Kirtishiree G emphasized the transformative potential of the MSNCU. She stated that the facility would be crucial in reducing neonatal mortality rates, encouraging exclusive breastfeeding, and fortifying the emotional bond between mother and child. A key benefit highlighted was the reduction in the need to refer cases to higher-level medical institutions, as advanced care is now available at the district level itself, saving critical time for families from remote areas.
How the MSNCU Model Benefits Families
The core philosophy of the new unit is integrated care. By ensuring mothers and infants stay together, the MSNCU leverages several proven health benefits. This close contact helps regulate the newborn's body temperature, lowers the risk of infections, improves nutrition through easier breastfeeding, and promotes faster weight gain. The 11 dedicated mother-baby beds will be supported by doctors and nursing staff providing round-the-clock supervision.
Furthermore, the facility is not just about immediate medical treatment. It also serves as a training ground for new mothers. During their stay, mothers will receive hands-on coaching in essential newborn care practices, correct breastfeeding techniques, and the use of expressed breast milk. This empowerment ensures they are confident and capable of providing effective care for their vulnerable babies after being discharged from the hospital, leading to better long-term outcomes.
