On the occasion of World AIDS Day, a significant awareness and education programme was organised in Varanasi on Monday. The event was spearheaded by the Centre of Excellence for Adolescent Health and Development at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) hospital, in collaboration with the National Health Mission and the Mamta Health Institute for Mother and Child.
Multidisciplinary Approach to a Complex Challenge
The programme, aligned with this year's global theme 'Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response', brought together a distinguished panel of medical experts. This highlighted the essential multidisciplinary strategy required to tackle the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic. The discussions focused on the persistent efforts needed to combat the disease despite various societal and healthcare challenges.
Expert Insights on Prevention and Education
Professor Tulika Rai, Head of the Dermatology Department at IMS-BHU, took centre stage to emphasise crucial prevention strategies. Her presentation aimed to demystify HIV transmission and provided attendees with practical knowledge about the precautions individuals can take to protect themselves and others. She underscored the power of accurate information in the fight against the virus.
Focusing on the social aspects, Professor Manushi Srivastava from the Department of Community Medicine addressed the gathering. She strongly encouraged adolescents and young adults to engage in open and honest conversations about their health. Prof. Srivastava stressed that fostering understanding and acceptance within communities is a critical step in combating the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV.
Protecting the Vulnerable
Professor Sarita Chaudhary, Head of Pediatric Surgery, directed attention towards vulnerable populations. Her focus was on raising specific awareness about AIDS in these groups. She highlighted the indispensable role of targeted education in preventing new infections and ensuring that those already affected by the virus receive adequate care, support, and compassion.
The collaborative event in Varanasi served as a vital platform to reinforce the message that a transformed, resilient, and inclusive response is key to overcoming disruptions in the global goal to end AIDS.
