Assam Red Cross Society Conducts Intensive Disaster Mitigation Training for College Students

The Assam State Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) has successfully organized a comprehensive two-day awareness campaign and specialized training camp at two distinct locations within the Golaghat district. This critical initiative was specifically designed to equip students with essential skills in disaster mitigation, first-aid procedures, and effective rescue techniques.

Collaborative Effort to Enhance Community Resilience

The significant program was conducted in a strategic partnership with Vivekanand Kendra and the NRL Hospital Numiligarh, pooling resources and expertise to maximize impact. A total of 350 enthusiastic students from Joya Gogoi College and Kamargaon College in Golaghat district actively participated in the intensive training sessions, demonstrating a strong commitment to community safety and preparedness.

Addressing Assam's Unique Vulnerability to Natural Disasters

The training camp was meticulously planned to address the pressing need for disaster readiness in Assam, a region that faces heightened risks due to its geographical location. Assam is situated within one of the most vulnerable seismic zones in India and is perennially prone to severe flooding events. The curriculum focused on practical first-aid training for injured individuals and efficient rescue methodologies, empowering students to act as first responders during emergencies.

Expert-Led Training with Full Institutional Support

The program was expertly led by master trainer Rituraj Kaushik, who provided in-depth instruction, with Hemant Sarma serving as the dedicated assistant trainer to ensure personalized guidance. The initiative received robust institutional support, with the principals of both participating colleges, Dr. Amiya Kumar Das and Dr. Goutam Kumar Saikia, actively involved in the proceedings. Additionally, several staff members from the associated hospital contributed their medical expertise, enriching the training experience for all attendees.

This proactive effort by the Assam State Indian Red Cross Society underscores a vital commitment to building a more resilient and prepared community, leveraging youth engagement to foster a culture of safety and immediate response capability in the face of natural disasters.
