ASHA Workers in Karnataka Protest for 5 Months' Incentive

ASHA workers in Karnataka staged a protest on Monday demanding payment of their pending incentives for the last five months. The protest, organized across the state, saw thousands of community health workers participating.

Protest Details

The demonstrators gathered in front of district health offices, holding placards and shouting slogans. They demanded the immediate release of their honorarium, which has been delayed since January 2026.

Pramod, the honorary president of the Sangha district unit, stated that the protest was a last resort after multiple appeals to the government went unanswered. He said, "We have been waiting for our rightful dues. The government must prioritize the welfare of ASHA workers who have been on the frontlines of healthcare."

Government Response

Following the statewide agitation, the Karnataka government released Rs 260 crore to clear the pending incentives. Pramod confirmed that the funds have been disbursed to the respective districts for distribution.

However, the ASHA workers have warned that they will continue their protests if the payment process is not completed promptly. They have also demanded a regular monthly payment schedule to avoid such delays in the future.

Background

ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers are a crucial part of the rural healthcare system in India. They provide basic medical services, promote health awareness, and act as a link between the community and the public health system. Despite their vital role, they often face delays in receiving their incentives, which are performance-based payments.

The protest in Karnataka is part of a larger trend across the country, where ASHA workers have been demanding better pay and job security. Many states have faced similar agitations in recent years.

The workers have expressed hope that the government will now ensure timely payments and address their other concerns, including the provision of proper equipment and training.
