In a significant step towards elder care, a new shelter home built at a cost of Rs 9.12 crore was inaugurated in Punjab's Mansa district. The facility, named 'Satkaar Ghar', was officially opened by the state's Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development, Baljit Kaur, on Saturday.
A New Home with Comprehensive Amenities
Minister Baljit Kaur detailed that the newly constructed shelter has a capacity to accommodate 72 elderly residents. It is designed to provide a host of free services aimed at ensuring a dignified life for senior citizens. The facilities are not limited to just lodging but extend to holistic care and engagement.
The Satkaar Ghar offers free day care services, nutritious meals, and essential medical assistance. For recreation and mental well-being, the home features a well-stocked library, a dedicated yoga room, and a spacious recreation hall. The minister announced that the department is rolling out special programmes for senior citizens and will be organising health camps in the near future.
Celebrations and Community Outreach
The inauguration day was doubly significant as it coincided with the state-level celebration of 'Dhiyan Di Lohri', a festival honouring the birth of girl children. On this occasion, Minister Baljit Kaur honoured 21 newborn baby girls, reinforcing the government's commitment to the welfare of the girl child.
The event also served as a platform for broader social welfare initiatives. In collaboration with ALIMCO and the Neki Foundation, the minister distributed wheelchairs and spectacles to persons with disabilities. Further, she recognised and honoured meritorious girls who have excelled in education, sports, and other fields. Adding to the day's benefits, pension approval letters were distributed to eligible senior citizens on the spot.
Public Grievances and Official Response
The gathering was addressed by local leaders including Budhlada MLA Budh Ram and Mansa MLA Vijay Singla, along with Mansa Deputy Commissioner Navjot Kaur. The event also became a forum for residents to voice their concerns.
Attendees from Mansa raised a critical issue regarding a stretch of the national highway near Ramdittewala Chowk. They highlighted that the road is in a dangerously bad condition, leading to accidents. The residents pointed out that the road has caved in at several spots and previous repair efforts by the administration have been inadequate. This public appeal put a spotlight on ongoing infrastructure challenges alongside the social welfare announcements.
