Kanpur: Residents of Kanpur division sweltered on Tuesday as the mercury soared to 44 degrees Celsius, recorded by the CSA observatory. The extreme heat forced people to stay indoors, with roads and market areas witnessing thin movement during the afternoon hours.
Heat Index and UV Levels Reach Extreme
At around 2 pm, the heat index peaked, giving an impact of nearly 46 to 47 degrees Celsius, creating highly risky conditions. Citizens were advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities. The maximum UV index was recorded between 10 and 12, falling into the "extreme" category, increasing the risk of sunburn and heat-related illnesses.
Weather Conditions and Forecast
The maximum relative humidity was recorded at 41%, indicating dry weather conditions. North-westerly winds blew at speeds ranging between 4.5 kmph and 13.9 kmph, further intensifying the heatwave-like conditions. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), residents of Kanpur Division may not get any respite from this extreme weather until June 5, 2026.
Dr S Sunil Pandey, weather expert at CSA University, echoed the IMD's forecast, stating that the situation is likely to persist until June 5 with no signs of relief. The agency has issued a yellow alert for several districts, cautioning people against extreme temperatures in the coming days and releasing a preventive advisory.
"A gradual rise in daytime temperatures is likely to persist throughout the week, and heatwave conditions may intensify further in the coming days," the weather forecasting body said. In its forecast for Wednesday, the IMD predicted that dry weather accompanied by bright sunshine is expected to continue in the city.
